AdVantage - the platform in the EU Parliament for debating the role and responsibility of advertising in the society

On October 3rd the Advantage platform was launched in the EU Parliament. MEP Krahmer (ALDE / Germany) hosted the event and launched the AdVantage website. More than 80 MEPs and representatives of the media and advertising industries listened to the opening remarks of Rik De Nolf, CEO of Roularta Media Group (Belgium).

AdVantage is being established as a platform to facilitate debate about the role and responsibilities of advertising in our society and its relation to EU policy-making. This non-partisan European initiative aims to encourage discussion on advertising-related issues in the European Parliament by bringing together political decision-makers and expertise from representatives of the advertising and media industries.

AdVantage wishes to set its agenda along these lines:

1. Advertising in the European economy

Advertising is an important indicator of a healthy economy. It enables companies to communicate with their clients, to inform consumers on products and services available to them and to provide the media with the necessary financial means to flourish.

In 2004, over €77.834 billion were invested in advertising, in the pre-accession 15 EU Member States. This investment in creative sectors (ad production and provision of diversity of media content) drive prosperity and support highly-skilled jobs. As such, the advertising sector contributes to the knowledge/services society that Europe needs to foster economic growth, competitiveness and employment.

2. Advertising in European Society

The ability to promote ideas, goods and services is linked to the freedom of expression, enshrined in the European Convention of Human Rights. Advertising provides the media with the resources to operate independently, to inform citizens about all aspects of political, economic, cultural and social life and to invest for the future. Advertising is key to diversity of content, quality and independence of the media in Europe.

3. Responsible Advertising

Responsible advertising is legal, decent, honest, truthful and ethical. Advertising self-regulation is a proportionate complement to statutory legislation in ensuring that advertising meets these key principles. Ongoing industry efforts to reinforce the operation of effective self-regulatory systems across the enlarged EU demonstrate its full commitment to responsible advertising.

4. The Aims of AdVantage

The central aims of the AdVantage Platform are to:

- Stimulate debate on the role of advertising in the Internal Market and in contributing to growth, competitiveness and employment;
- Provide evidence of the benefits of commercial communications;
- Discuss EU policy objectives on advertising in the context of arising legislative debates;
- Encourage industry to bring expertise to this debate.
