Core areas of magazine publishing under threat

Again we feel that the European magazine publishing sector is under serious threat from different angles due to continuous policy initiatives in areas like advertising, intellectual property, freedom of expression and VAT. This e.MAG informs you about the most vibrant and relevant EU issues for our sector.

The EU Institutions effectively hibernate for four to six weeks from mid July until the end of August. However, in advance of this long summer break, a flurry of activity from the Institutions has kept FAEP busy with a number of important new policy initiatives which have been placed on the table:

Notably, the Commission’s July Communication on VAT will keep the publishing lobby busy for the next months and probably years. Similarly, the question of car advertising within the context of C02 emissions has been discussed with more frequency over the last two months and will run through the decision making process in the European Parliament in September and October.

Other EU and related lobby issues have also remained alive in the last weeks, notably press freedom, alcohol advertising, consumer acquis, digital libraries and carbon footprint, all of which are high priority issues for the second half of this year.

But you will also find in this e.MAG news about the foreseen launch of the new advertising platform “AdVantage” in the EU Parliament, a global framework agreement on quality journalism signed by a German media group and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), FAEP’s work on a press freedom charter, as well as the first European Paper Recycling Award waiting for your paper recycling initiatives to apply.

The next eMAG will be in September – any important news developments will be conveyed on an ad hoc basis between now and then.
