Invited by the Chairman of the Corporate Advisory Group, Dr. Philipp Busch, the MEPs Erika Mann (PSE), Rebecca Harms (Green Party) and Dr. Jorgo Chatzimarkakis (ALDE) discussed with Holger Jung, President of the German Advertising Council, further advertising restrictions and requirements for food, alcohol and cars to be possibly introduced by the EU. The MEPs explained that even within the political groups in the EU Parliament there are very different views on freedom of advertising, depending on the national background of the deputies. Therefore a wider platform in the Parliament to discuss these issues would be welcome. FAEP is co-initiating such a platform called "AdVantage" to be launched in October 2007.
Mathias Mueller von Blumencron, editor in chief of the most successful German news site “Spiegel online”, gave an overview about relevant aspects of media convergence and its implications on the regulatory framework. Currently his main concern is the massive investment of public broadcasters to their online portals. These players are about to become the most challenging competitors for private news sites, but are financed by tax money.
Finally Max von Abendroth, Director of Communication and Sustainability, summarised the ongoing debate about informing patients about prescription drugs. As magazines are one of the preferred sources of information for patients, printed media should not be excluded in disseminating validated high quality information to patients.
This meeting was the second of its kind in Germany. It provides an excellent opportunity to exchange views between Members of the European Parliament and publishers.
