15.03.2006 / FAEP comments on the Green Paper on the promotion of healthy diets and physical activity

Tackling EU’s growing obesity problem is a key priority in EU public health policy.

In December 2005, the Commission adopted a Green Paper that invited contributions on a broad range of issues related to obesity, including consumer information and education, advertising and marketing and the effectiveness of self-regulation.

On 15 March, FAEP submitted its contribution to the Green Paper consultation, underlining the positive role magazine can play to tackle obesity through articles promoting healthy diet and physical activity, specialised titles and collaboration with public authorities.

The FAEP position also states that publishers will not entertain EU action in attempting to ‘limit’ the ability of the press to carry advertising for legally available goods and services. Voluntary codes as regards advertising self-regulation are a perfectly adequate tool in providing protection and redress for consumers.
